KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An 18-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri has been charged with second-degree involuntary manslaughter in connection to an April 2023 deadly crash. According to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, Te'Ron D. Chappell is facing one count of involuntary manslaughter in the second degree after police say he caused a crash that left 67-year-old Larry McDonald dead. 18-year-old charged in shooting death of dad in Adrian, Missouri Initial crash reports said that just after midnight on Saturday, April 15, 2023, Chappell, 17 years old at the time, was speeding westbound in a Dodge Avenger on Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard (MLK Boulevard) when he hit a Ram 5500 Tow Truck. The truck had its emergency equipment lights on and was attempting to tow a disabled Kia Sorento in the left turn lane of MLK Boulevard before being hit in the Eastwood Trafficway intersection. The crash report said that Chappell drove through the intersection's red light and tried to fit between the tow truck and a Cadillac Seville waiting in the inner left turn lane of eastbound MLK Boulevard. However, Chappell ended up hitting the Cadillac head-on, causing his car to slide sideways and crash into two other cars -- a Kia Sorento and a Pontiac Montana. According to court records, Chappell, along with the four other people in the Dodge, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. KCPD attempting to locate parents, guardians of young child McDonald, the driver of the Cadillac, was pronounced dead at the scene. Crash reports said that the drivers of the Kia and the Pontiac were not injured in the crash and refused medical treatment. According to the probable cause statement, after the crash, detectives arrived at Children's Mercy Hospital to interview Chappell. He claimed that he had been driving with friends before picking up a "juvenile male" suffering from a gunshot wound. Chappell claimed that the crash occurred as he was driving the shooting victim to a hospital. Detectives then interviewed the shooting victim who claimed he had been riding in a Nissan Altima when he was shot by an "unknown white male wearing a bandana over his nose and mouth and a baseball cap and all black clothing who was riding a motorcycle." He was then dropped off at a Raytown apartment complex where he was later picked up by Chappell. Court records said that the shooting victim had been sitting in the right passenger seat of the Dodge at the time of the crash. However, he claimed to not remember anything due to passing out. The probable cause statement said that the other occupants in the Dodge "couldn't provide any further details relating to the crash." Suspect accused of shooting man, kidnapping two victims in Lee’s Summit Search warrants revealed that Chappell had been speeding at 104 mph five seconds before the crash. The posted speed for westbound MLK Boulevard and Eastwood Trafficway is 45 mph. He also was not wearing a seatbelt. Chappell is currently being held at a Jackson County jail and has a bail set at $75,000. His most recent court appearance was Tuesday at 1 p.m.
