INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Tuesday, the Independence Police Department celebrated the grand opening of its new substation inside the Independence Center shopping mall. IPD said the goal is to boost safety and security while also preventing crime and violence. But that’s not all; officers would also like to use the new space for community engagement opportunities. “We're going to have an open space where people can come in, they can interact with their officers if they have a question if they want to volunteer, if they want to inquire about a job, we are going to cover all of those spaces in here,” said IPD Public Information Officer Kelley Rupert. Police chief shares concern over traffic tickets regarding new Missouri law Years ago, IPD had a substation inside the Independence Center but that changed in the early 2000s when the station moved outside the center. “We got away from it for a long time. We were still here, but you couldn't see us necessarily. So I think in today's world of policing, it's very important for the community to know that we are accessible, and they're going to be comfortable coming in here,” said Sgt. Tyler Duke. Another goal is to reduce and prevent shoplifting and other crimes. Duke will be working in the substation. He said violence did contribute to the decision to move inside, but it’s not the only reason behind the move. “The violence that is just kind of plaguing the community and nation as a whole. It's important for people to know that we're here, like I said, that we're accessible, and that we're always going to be here for them,” Duke explained. “So, yes, I think the violence has led to us being here, but that's not necessarily the main push behind it.” Independence Mayor Rory Rowland read a proclamation during the substation’s opening event.
