ELKIN, N.C. (WGHP) -- In Elkin, people are drying out after a historic flood hit the small town in Surry County when Hurricane Helene rolled through the area. While Western North Carolina has a long road to recovery ahead, downtown Elkin is rebounding with some business owners getting ready to reopen after the historic flooding.   The owners of Hunt’s Homestyle were stunned and heartbroken after seeing the destruction to their building because they had only opened two months ago. “You can still see on the bricks where the water was up to. The floor was just covered in mud,” said Hunter Johnson, the co-owner of Hunt’s Homestyle. Johnson was in disbelief when he walked into his new restaurant and saw mud covering every inch of the ground. “The mud was probably about two inches everywhere,” Johnson said. Around 20 people helped the Johnsons wipe away the remains of Hurricane Helene.  “The first course of action was getting the water that was still standing in the kitchen. At first, it was just a lot of buckets and paling the water out ... Once we got a good majority out, we would just squeegee it out,” Johnson said. This much cleaning was a process that Johnson says took hours.  “Everything from about the knees down had to have a good scrub,” he said. The Johnsons are counting their blessings days after the flooding. “We have minimal damage. It could be a lot worse,” Johnson said. The destruction was mostly water damage to the walls, and the freezers and fridges needed repairs.  “Some of them had water in them, and we cleaned it out, scrubbed it out, sanitized it out multiple times,” Johnson said. The biggest shock to the family was that they never lost power, which helped them salvage much of their supplies.  After many hours of cleaning up, Hunt’s Homestyle is ready to serve biscuits to the community again. “We did not expect to have it all cleaned up and ready to open in three days," Johnson said. Hunt’s Homestyle will reopen on Wednesday and will return to normal business hours.
