(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) arrested one person after he assaulted a deputy and refused to evacuate a building when given an eviction notice. According to EPSO, deputies assigned to the Civil Unit responded to the 3300 block of Verde Drive near Leon Young Sports Complex to complete an eviction. Ahead of their arrival, deputies were told the original party on the lease had moved out but numerous other people — likely squatters — had moved in and occupied the apartment. Upon arrival, deputies began the eviction and announced their presence and intent. When they entered the unit, they found four men. Three of them complied with deputies' requests, but one — later identified as 34-year-old Erek Jones, refused and told deputies he was not leaving. Jones was known to be verbally abusive with apartment staff. Jones attempted to assault one of the deputies, and another man, identified as 28-year-old Ernie Jones, also began to physically assault deputies as well. A call for assistance was placed and resources from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and the Colorado Springs Police Department arrived and detained both individuals. Erek Jones was found to have a warrant for his arrest, and booked into the El Paso County Jail. He was also charged with 2nd-degree assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing a peace officer. “I am incredibly thankful none of my deputies were seriously injured during this incident," said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. "Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to the Colorado Springs Police Department and our Patrol Division deputies for their swift response and assistance.” EPSO says the key to protecting yourself and preventing squatters from entering your home is to take security measures such as locking your door and using a camera when you're out of town.
