BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man accused of killing his 71-year-old mother inside a trailer in Wasco made his first court appearance Monday. Felix Vasquez-Hernandez, 42, pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder and was ordered held without bail. He's due back in court Oct. 10. Motions hearing postponed in Karim Reyad case Sheriff's officials say deputies were dispatched Sept. 24 to a report of a stabbing in the 13000 block of Wildwood Road. They found a woman in Vasquez-Hernandez's trailer, her hands bound behind her back, ankles tied together and a cord looped around her neck, according to a probable cause declaration. She had an apparent stab wound to her back, according to the declaration. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A relative of the woman told investigators she had gone to Vasquez-Hernandez's trailer to offer him food. When she didn't return, the relative went to check on her, saw her facedown and unresponsive in the trailer, then ran to get help. Other people arrived. One said Vasquez-Hernandez didn't speak but kept smiling "like he wasn't even there," according to the declaration. Vasquez-Hernandez told investigators he'd been smoking methamphetamine and heard voices. "When asked about killing his mother, Vasquez-Hernandez acted as if he did not know his mother was dead, while showing no negative emotions to the supposedly new information," an investigator wrote.
