ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Both high and low temperatures ran above average for September with the warmest day coming on September 15 (85° for a high temperature). There were 13 days that got over 80° for highs. The month ran +2.8° above average, putting it at the 13th warmest on record. When can we expect the first frost? Only seven days were below normal with an average difference of six degrees. This warmth was defined by overnight lows. Get this: Only two days fell below 50° (9/3, 9/8). That's the second lowest number of days below 50° on record. The lowest was back in 1881 when we only had one day below 50°. This has successfully delayed fall color around the region. It's almost October, which means Letchworth will be erupting in color soon. This season's color has been slow, likely the result of dry weather and lack of overnight cold. Hopefully, the end result will be worth the wait! pic.twitter.com/znX2m7WMy9— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) September 29, 2024 Cold nights as well as shorter amounts of daylight help drive leaf color change. We have gotten the shorter daylight, but not the cold. Expect leaves to peak with fall color in late October.
