ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A local veterans organization invites the community to celebrate our female vets and all they do to serve the Greater Rochester region. This is the seventh year that Compeer Corps Rochester will host the Female Veteran of the Year awards, dedicating an evening to celebrating women who often feel overlooked in their military service. Nominees are chosen both for their time in the service and how they've reached out to inspire and support other vets here at home. Compeer's executive director says women often feel shame if they come from a non-combat role, and therefore don't qualify for some support programs. "There's a lot out there for male veterans. There's a lot out there actually in the Rochester community for veterans, period. Rochester has a great wealth of resources here, and not so many things that are dedicated to our female counterparts. So, it's really important to me that we take the time—not only to honor with something like this—but also to just have activities year-round where females can feel comfortable coming and have that comradery with each other," explains Sara Passamonte. The awards will be this Friday at 5:30 pm at Avalon ROC. If youre unable to attend, you can also sponsor any female veteran's seat at the event. Proceeds from the event support Compeer's programs including sporting activities, recreation, and support groups connecting veterans.
