TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Topeka Police Department (TPD) will host public training sessions to learn about common scams, cybercrimes and how to protect yourself in October. The TPD Financial Crimes Unit will give one-hour presentations followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. The sessions will be open to the public and held in person. There is no registration required to attend. “Cybercrimes are on the rise nationwide, and the Topeka Police Department is dedicated to equipping our community with the knowledge needed to avoid falling victim,” said Interim TPD Chief Jamey Haltom. “I encourage everyone to attend and learn how we can work together to prevent these crimes in the Capital City.” The cyber fraud awareness sessions will be held: From 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 at Melvin Auditorium 101C in the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Street. From 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Brewster Place Event Center, 900 SW 31st Street. From 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Oct. 17, at the Oakland Community Center, 801 NE Poplar Street. What are minute pirate bugs and why are they biting people? “Cybercrime has been steadily growing in the United States and is a worldwide phenomenon that has taken advantage of our ever-increasing digital world,” said TPD’s financial crimes supervisor, Sergeant Ky Shorb. “It is imperative that people protect themselves against this financial threat.
