PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Enforcement will begin for drivers in Providence who ignore the red flashing stop lights of school buses.
Starting today, drivers may face fines from $250 to $500 for illegally passing school buses.
All Providence Public Schools district buses are now equipped with safety technology, including stop-arm enforcement cameras to detect vehicles that pass stopped school buses.
The first fine is a written warning, while drivers will face fees for additional penalties.
According to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS), school buses are unlawfully passed more than 43.5 million times each school year in the United States.
