MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Closing arguments will begin on Tuesday morning in the federal trial for three former Memphis Police officers charged in the 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith rested their cases on Monday after calling experts to the stand who testified the force used during the fatal traffic stop was justified. Prosecutors have argued over the last three weeks that the officers used excessive force, failed to render aid, didn't intervene, and conspired to cover up the crime. The officers are facing federal charges of excessive force, failure to intervene, and obstructing justice through witness tampering. They face up to life in prison if convicted. Desmond Mills and Emmitt Martin took deals and pleaded guilty to federal civil rights and conspiracy charges. All five officers also face state criminal charges of second-degree murder, among other charges, in the Nichols case. ► MORE ON TYRE NICHOLS Tyre Nichols was stopped and beaten by police on January 7.
