HONOLULU (KHON2) -- In a place where winter means sun-soaked beaches rather than hibernation, the Aloha Bears are gearing up for a season filled with excitement and purpose. This October, they will begin presales for their annual Aloha Bears Calendar. It's a project that not only captures the vibrant spirit of Hawaiʻi but also supports local charities. This welcoming attitude has made the organization a cherished part of the community, and the upcoming calendar reflects their commitment to connection and charity. In 2023, the Aloha Bears sold out of their 100 calendars quickly, raising over $2,000 for local charities like Gregory House. “We learned from last year and started earlier this time,” Francione explained. With several photoshoots already completed and a final one scheduled for Oct. 12, the Bears are excited to bring a fresh collection of community-driven photos to their supporters. The calendar serves not just as a keepsake but as a reminder of the Aloha Bears’ dedication to giving back. “Proceeds will benefit various local causes, making it a celebration of our culture and the people who call this island home,” Francione said. For 2024, the Bears are producing a 12-month calendar, showcasing local models who have participated in their events, making it a true reflection of the community. One exciting event coming up is the monthly pool tournament on Oct. 6 at Tapa’s Waikīkī. “It’s a chance to bring people together for good times and great friends,” Francione noted. With a modest entry fee of $5, participants can compete for a winner-takes-all prize while enjoying drink specials and a lively atmosphere. Every first Sunday is dedicated to this tournament, creating a festive gathering that reinforces bonds among members. The Aloha Bears are also looking forward to participating in Honolulu Pride on Oct. 19. They have secured a trolley to transport participants through Waikīkī, adding a splash of color and joy to the celebration. “It’s important for us to celebrate diversity and show our support for the LGBTQ+ community,” Francione emphasized. This event allows the organization to connect with others and promote inclusivity in a spirited environment. Another highlight of their schedule is the popular Bear Boat/Booze Cruise on Nov. 10. Participants will enjoy a fun day on the water, complete with an open bar and lunch. “It’s a great way to meet new friends and enjoy the beauty of Hawaiʻi,” Francione shared. Such events showcase the Aloha Bears’ knack for blending adventure with relaxation, allowing members and guests to bond over shared experiences. The organization’s commitment to community extends beyond hosting events. They hold general meetings where members can engage with one another and discuss future plans. “We sit together as ʻohana, talk story, and enjoy each other’s company before the meeting,” Francione explained. These gatherings not only strengthen connections among members but also empower them to take an active role in shaping the organization’s direction. Looking ahead, the Aloha Bears are enthusiastic about expanding their reach. “We’re always looking for ways to grow and engage more with the community,” Francione stated. With plans for the annual Lei-a-Bear event, they aim to attract visitors from around the world to experience the unique festivities of Honolulu. “This weekend will feature a full schedule of parties, entertainment, and activities,” he added, hinting at the excitement to come. As the presales for the Aloha Bears Calendar approach, community members are encouraged to support this initiative that embodies the spirit of aloha while enjoying a year filled with engaging events. “If we get the word out, we might be able to increase the number of calendars we produce,” Francione noted, expressing hope for a positive response. In a world where connection is vital, the Aloha Bears stand as a shining example of how joy and philanthropy can coexist. As they prepare for another exciting season, they remind us all that there’s no need for winter hibernation in Hawaiʻi—only a celebration of life, love and community.
