CHARLOTTE, N.C – Atrium Health will deploy its MED-1 mobile hospital to Tryon, North Carolina following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. Activated by the state, MED-1 will serve as a receiving hospital where it can triage, treat and either discharge or transport a patient to another hospital if more critical care is needed. Atrium Health’s MED-1 is designed to deliver comprehensive patient care on-site at disaster locations, mass casualty incidents, or community events. This unique hospital on wheels, the first of its kind globally, can be ready for deployment within 24 hours of activation and be fully operational within an hour of arrival. MED-1 is self-sustaining for up to 72 hours and includes digital x-ray, ultrasound, lab, pharmacy, 14 acute care beds, a 2-bed operating room, and more. The mobile hospital is composed of nearly a dozen vehicles, including an emergency department, supply trucks, satellite trailers, dormitory trailers, and other essential equipment vehicles. The unit is supported by a team of Atrium Health professionals, including nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, and other essential staff. What is Atrium Health MED-1? Owned by Atrium Health and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Atrium Health’s MED-1 is a mobile hospital designed to provide comprehensive patient care at the site of a disaster, mass casualty incident or community event. Providing on-site medical care, MED-1 extends the mission of Atrium Health to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing – for ALL. • Atrium Health MED-1 is a mobile emergency department. • It is the first of its kind in the world, a unique hospital on wheels. • MED-1 can be ready to deploy within 24-hours of activation. • Atrium Health teammates deploy with the unit including nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, CRNAS, IS, support personnel and other staff including but not limited to the emergency, ICU and surgical departments. • MED-1 can be fully operational within an hour of arrival and is self-sustaining for 72-hours. • Beds, medical supplies and other equipment travel with the unit. • The hospital unit includes digital x-ray, ultrasound, lab, pharmacy, 14 acute care beds, a 2-bed operating room and much more that is needed in an emergency department. • MED-1 is made up of nearly a dozen vehicles including the emergency department, the supply truck, a satellite trailer, dormitory trailers, shower and bathroom trailers and other necessary equipment vehicles. • The unit was developed in 2000 and is owned by Atrium Health.
