BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana doesn't have to worry about potential tropical weather development right now, but we are monitoring the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico. A trough of low pressure in the western Caribbean is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. Further development is possible as this moves to the west and northwest. A tropical depression could form over the next few days. Until we see a well-defined center of low-level circulation, additional details about where and how it could develop will remain a little fuzzy. It has a 10% chance of development over the next two days and a 40% chance of development over the next seven days. The good thing is the development chances over the seven-day period were reduced to 40% from 50% yesterday. At the end of the week moisture will move into our area. An uptick in moisture will help rain chances to increase. There's a slight chance of showers for the Baton Rouge area from Thursday into early next week. Tropical Depression 12 is now Tropical Storm Kirk. Kirk has maximum sustained wind speeds of 45 mph and is moving to the northwest at 8 mph. Kirk poses no threat to the U.S. It will likely remain in the Atlantic until it fizzles. Invest 91L is an area of low pressure a few hundred miles SSW of the Cabo Verde Islands. Showers and thunderstorms associated with this area of low pressure are becoming better organized. It now has a high chance of tropical development over the next two and seven days.
