Prosecutor Eric Smith said the shooting stemmed from an altercation between rival gangs hours earlier.
He said Knight fired at a car driven by a rival gang member. The gunfire struck two children in the vehicle: Kason Guyton and Guyton's brother, then 7.
Kason died, his brother survived.
Timothy Hennessy, Knight's attorney, said co-defendant Jeremy King, who has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, is trying to pin the blame on his client in exchange for a deal in which he'll be sentenced to time served.
King drove the vehicle from which the shots were fired.
