FLORENCE — When the Florence High varsity boys’ soccer team has all of its weapons at its disposal, it is a very dangerous squad. Add Charles Norfleet to the Flashes’ growing list of scorers. When the freshman forward/midfielder put in his first goal Monday in a Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division clash with Bordentown, that was not enough. So Norfleet went on to score twice more and register his first hat trick on the same day he notched his first tally. That gives head coach Kyle Ballay seven different scorers thus far this season who have amassed 35 goals in 11 games. Five of those came yesterday as Florence surprised the Scotties, 5-2. It was the Flashes’ eighth win of the season, and just B’town’s second loss (first in the Patriot). Head coach Jason Zablow’s Scotties had pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over Florence on opening day. “Yes, we lost to them the first time, but this was the same old, same old,” Norfleet said. “We were ready to compete. I told myself, ‘Don’t get mad. Just stay calm.’” That was a theme for the day for Norfleet, who could have gotten a big head after following a free kick by senior forward Derek Tindall to put in his first varsity goal in the fifth minute versus Bordentown. Instead, he kept attacking from his wing position and came back to score two more goals in a five-minute span midway through the second half to get the hat trick. “I was calm. I had no worries,” Norfleet said. “I stayed calm, cool and collected.” Considering Norfleet’s second and third scores came shortly after the Scotties had finally gotten on the board to trim the lead to 3-1, that was not the easiest thing for any player in the game to be, most notably a freshman. Yet there was Norfleet with not a care in the world as he knocked in a second cross from Tindall by being exactly where he was supposed to be (at the far post) in the 62nd minute, then following a drive by junior forward Jordan Borota on which B’town freshman goalkeeper Liam Mellor came out off his line to make a dandy save, only to see Norfleet once again be where he was supposed to be doing what he was supposed to do – finishing. “I feel like, even though we let one in early, we were still on it,” Scotties junior forward Asher DeSilva said. “We had multiple chances to tie, but couldn’t make it happen.” DeSilva got the visitors on the board midway through the second half when he tapped in a pass from his classmate Tyler Kunkel to make it, 3-1. “When I scored, we were still only down two,” DeSilva said. “Then they scored again. It was like a reaction goal.” As if Norfleet’s production was not enough of a problem with which to contend, Bordentown saw Tindall, the area’s leading scorer, notch two more goals to give him 18 on the season (64 on his career) and extend Florence’s lead mid-game. Senior Eddie Smith led Tindall as he scored on a crossing shot with four minutes left in the first half. Ten minutes after intermission, Tindall was at it again, this time running with Borota to connect. With 1:30 left in the game, B’town’s George Sara knocked in a lead from Grant Pillik. But, by then, the Flashes’ firepower had proven too much.
