The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced restoration work at Sonny Vereen Playground, which started Monday. The project involves installing clean soil, grass, and mulch. The park will close for approximately four weeks during the work. The EPA completed similar improvements at Breunig Avenue Park on September 26. Sections of that park remain fenced off to allow grass to grow. These actions stem from the EPA’s discovery of elevated lead levels in surface soils at both parks during a winter 2024 investigation of the Historic Potteries Site. The EPA proposes adding this site to the National Priorities List, making it eligible for federal cleanup funding under the Superfund program. The agency offers free soil testing for East Trenton residents. Interested property owners can contact Jonathan Byk at (347) 899-6210. The EPA seeks public comments on the proposed addition of the Historic Potteries site to the National Priorities List. The comment period runs from September 5 to November 4, 2024. Comments can be submitted online at www.regulations.gov by searching for “Historic Potteries” or “EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0374”. Alternatively, comments can be mailed to: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, EPA Docket Center Superfund, EPA-HQ-OLEM-2024-0374, Mail Code 28221T, 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20460.
