SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- More resources and support have been sent to Louisiana to help the three San Diego Fire-Rescue task force members who were hurt in a crash while en route to help victims of Hurricane Helene. Chaplains, support K9's and peer support teams are now in Louisiana to help the families of the injured firefighters and the other firefighters. “They put their life on the line for us everyday, we’re strangers to them and they don’t care, they’re out there risking their lives everyday," said Sara Berns, executive director of Firefighter Aid. The non-profit helps heroic firefighters in times of need, whether on or off the job. SDFD task force members injured in crash on way to NC for Hurricane Helene relief efforts Early Sunday morning, three members of the task force were involved in a two-vehicle crash on East Highway 20 near the Texas-Louisiana border, as they were headed east to help with the relief efforts in Charlotte, North Carolina. A battalion chief and two captains were airlifted to a Shreveport Hospital. “Really truly heroes, they get that a lot, but they are the last ones to describe themselves as that," Berns said. She said the organization's board members flew to Louisiana within hours of the crash and are first helping the firefighter's families short-term needs of travel expenses to get to Louisiana, and will also with long-term needs as they recover. “It's going to be a long-haul for these firefighters, getting their family members out there, making sure that their needs are met, their family’s needs are met, so that they’re not worrying about anything but the care of their loved one, making sure they get home safely," she added. When they get back, they plan to help with any ongoing medical care they may need like house renovations or even yard work. "They would never ask for it...that’s what we are here for," Berns added. The Urban Search and Rescue California Task Force 8 has helped with relief in areas all across the state for years. “This task force has been sent out many times and this is the first time from my understanding there’s ever been an incident like this," Berns said. "This task force has been sent far back as 9/11.” San Diego Fire-Rescue sends water rescue team to NC for Hurricane Helene President Joe Biden addressed the crash during a press conference Tuesday morning while discussing Hurricane Helene relief, “On their way, they were in a terrible car accident, we pray for their recovery, but it was a bad accident." The rest of the crew are waiting at a hotel in Texas as officials determine their next steps. The names of the firefighters have not yet been released, but officials said they are aiming to provide an update on Tuesday.
