DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – Nearly a year and a half after Irvo Otieno died at Central State Hospital while in police custody, day one of the first criminal trial begins. Several twists and turns took place in the cases related to the death of Irvo Otieno before the jury was selected in the first criminal trial Monday Morning. On March March 6, 2023, Otieno died at Central State Hospital while in the custody of Henrico County sheriff’s deputies. Initially, 10 people were charged in connection to his death. Since then, three Commonwealth's attorneys in Dinwiddie have led the case. Now, three cases remain after several charges were dropped. The remaining cases include Henrico Sheriff's deputies Brandon Rodgers and Kaiyell Sanders and Wavie Jones, a Central State Hospital worker at the time of the incident. The charges for the three remaining suspects were downgraded from second-degree murder to involuntary manslaughter. 8News learned the defense moved to admit new videos into evidence to prove Jones acted appropriately when, they claim, Otieno was combative and aggressive towards law enforcement and staff. On Monday, surveillance video was shown in the courtroom and several other pieces of evidence -- including additional photos and videos that are expected to be used to help back up arguments on both sides.
