HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Department of Justice revealed a Hawaii man has pled guilty after violating the Atomic Energy Act in 2018. Stolen jewels, boa constrictors killing owners, check out Weird News here According to reports, 60-year-old Mark Kazee was caught transferring equipment containing radioactive material from his former company to a new company that did not have the proper license. Kazee also did not record the transfer. Officials said Kazee worked in the equipment testing industry for more than 30 years, serving as both an inspector and a supervisor of inspectors. Police searching for attempted murder suspect Court documents reported that Kazee created his own company with another person in September 2018, which did not have a license to conduct industrial radiography from the NRC. Despite this, his company began conducting inspections at a major refinery on Oahu with his old employer's equipment, which he failed to create and maintain a record for. Kazee knew what had to be done to comply with the regulations that protect the public from potential harms arising from the use of radioactive materials, but consciously chose not to follow them. His failures appropriately have criminal consequences and we will continue to pursue such to protect the community. U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors for the District of Hawaii The DOJ said the equipment contained Iridium-192 and depleted uranium radioactive source material. “It is crucial that those who use radioactive material for commercial purposes follow the rules to protect the user and the public," explained Director Thomas Ashley of the NRC's Office of Investigations.
