Thousands of Verizon customers in Chicago and across the country reported service outages Monday.In a statement posted to X, Verizon said it was aware of the outages and was “working quickly to identify and solve the issue.” More than 100,000 Verizon customers across the country experienced outages Monday morning, according to the website Downdetector.com.In Chicago, there were 4,490 reports of Verizon outages about 10:20 a.m., according to the site. As of 4:20 p.m. — shortly after Verizon said its engineers had "made progress" and service was starting to be restored — the number of reports in Chicago had dropped to 441. By 7 p.m. the number was down to 16 in the city, though there were still more than 2,800 reports nationwide. Many commenting on the Downdetector.com page during the peak of the outage said their mobile phones were stuck in SOS mode, meaning the device was not connected to a cellular network but could still make emergency calls.
