Man dies in hitandrun collision in National City

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run collision in National City early Saturday morning, according to police.
Officers responded to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian around 2:28 a.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of Sweetwater Road, National City Police said Monday.

According to officers, the pedestrian, a 30-year-old National City resident, was walking across the road when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV. Officers said the driver of the SUV reportedly got out and moved the victim to the side of the road before driving away from the scene.
The victim sustained traumatic head injuries from the collision, police said. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead, according to officers.

Several hours later, around 10:45 a.m., officers arrested Bennie Ray Womack, 43, in San Diego on suspicion of vehicular homicide, NCPD said.
The victim's identity has not been released pending family notification.
