SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - The impact of Hurricane Helene is bigger than property and power outages; the storm took the lives of many and threatened the lives of others. Romie Cummings and Tanika Lamar, owners of Tanika and the Chef catering, were piled up in the bed with their two youngest children and their three dogs when a massive pine tree came down, crushing their roof. Sadly their oldest dog, Dia, died. Now, they're taking a breather and mourning their loss, but community members are making sure they know they aren't alone. Their friends and the owners of Bandana Burger in Habersham Village are raising money for the family. "What they have gone through is unimaginable," William LaFlower said. "We could never imagine that happening to us." Bandana Burger is also donating some of the money raised to Renegade Paws Rescue in Savannah. "I mean, everybody that's gone through anything in this storm, you know, we could be without power. But they had a tree crash straight through their house, and it took the life of their dog. You know, it banged them up pretty bad. We're huge dog lovers. We're huge local business lovers," LaFlower said. And that is why they wanted to lend a hand, even when Bandana Burger still has no power. Cummings and Lamar described just how terrifying it was to look for their children and dogs in the debris. "We were digging.... it felt like forever," Lamar said. "It was dark. Our power went out at 2:30 that morning, and when I pulled the rubble off of [my son], I just saw his eyes. But something was... I can't explain it, but it seems like I don't know if our eyes adjusted to the darkness or if there was a light shining to help us find our kids." The four of them walked away from the home with some scrapes and bruises. Thankfully, their other two teenagers were asleep on the other side of the house. They say they are thankful for their lives, and the time they had with Dia. Now, the dog is buried in their backyard, in her favorite sunny spot. "Honestly, I feel like if it wasn't for [Dia], we wouldn't be alive. It's like she took the most of the impact," Lamar said. "I just want Dia to be remembered, because everybody said they never met a dog like that. She didn't bark, and all she wanted to do was flop down and sunbathe," Cummings said. Cummings is forever haunted by the sound he heard in the dark that night. "I never heard anything like that in my life, and I will never forget it," Cummings said.
