CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hurricane Helene has now taken over 100 lives, with the death toll still rising. Rescue teams from across the country have flocked to the hardest hit areas.  On Sunday night, the Virginia Task Force 8 team from Chesterfield County Fire and EMS made it home after working around the clock in southwest Virginia.  The 19 crew members helped evacuate 90 people in their three-and-a-half-day mission around southwest Virginia. One of the crew members described what they saw in one word, "catastrophic." One video from Chesterfield Fire and EMS showed the team rescuing four elderly people and three cats in raging water in the pitch black of night. The house is shown to be in front of a dam that was near overflowing. In total, the crew performed seven water rescues and eight rescues from people’s homes.  “There’s many families, homes, businesses that have taken a great loss," said crew member John Jacobson. "They’re definitely in need in southwest Virginia.” Jacobson said the area they were in was full of mountain towns with a lot of streams. But because of Hurricane Helene, what would normally be a stream had become a large river.  “Most of the residents told us that this was the worst flooding they had ever seen in Wythe County in their lifetimes," he said. With no cell service and spotty radio connection, the team was monitoring the area day and night. Crew member Justin Bennett was up in a helicopter, looking down below to look for people in need of rescuing.  One memory that stuck out in his mind was when they spotted two people stuck on logs, surrounded by water. “We’re lucky that we saw them because it’s not like we’re dispatched to a specific area," Bennett said. "We’re flying along the river.” He said the only reason they spotted them was because one of them was wearing a bright pink jacket. “In addition to that, then we had to also convince a few people, die-hards, that were like ‘I’m not leaving,'" Jacobson said. "And we were like, ‘You don’t understand that this is going to get worse than what it is right now.'”
