GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- The Greensboro Police Department has answered the call from the Asheville Police Department to send in reinforcements. The call came in at 8 p.m. Saturday, Less than 16 hours later, dozens of officers hit the road westward. “It’s anticipated that these officers will be there for the next five to seven days," GPD Chief John Thompson said. 36 Greensboro officers got on the road to Asheville Sunday afternoon. "When something like this happens, they are able to drop everything that they’re doing with the support of the police department and the City of Greensboro and go help another community," Thompson said. Within ten minutes, the emails from officers volunteering to go were pouring in, according to Lieutenant H.J. Velez. "It’s amazing. Most of the whole department wanted to go," Velez said. If help is still needed, an additional team will go at the end of next week.  “We have an additional 30 plus officers who volunteered, and they may get that opportunity if we exchange out the officers who are going," Thompson said. In addition to multiple heavy-duty law enforcement vehicles, some specially trained officers will have their all-terrain vehicles and equipment as well. “Most of all, we are going to provide security," Velez said. For those who volunteered to go, the decision was easy. "They have their families they are trying to look after as well as the community, and an event like this can really over-burden their resources, so the opportunity to go up and assist them is a privilege on our part," Thompson said. “Of course, we are a brotherhood. We have to help each other," Velez said. With fewer officers in the city, the GPD will lean on their public safety partners as needed.
