GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — 911 call centers in the western part of North Carolina are inundated right now as people start to clean up and look for their loved ones after Helene.  With such a high volume, many of those calls are being diverted to Guilford County. "They're crying. They're emotional. They're very worried and frantic," Deputy Director of Operations for Guilford Metro 911 Christine Moore said. These calls are some of the hardest to take for Guilford Metro 911 telecommunicators. "We're receiving everything from people wanting to do welfare checks on family members they haven't seen or heard from, but we're also doing medical calls, fire rescues. It runs the gamut," Moore said. They started taking calls from the western part of the state on Friday and have gotten 140 calls since. The calls are coming from Buncombe, Macon, Transylvania, Yancey, Avery, Graham, Burke, Henerson, Jackson, Haywood and McDowell Counties.  They're being re-routed through a statewide telephone system, but these calls are logistically more difficult. "I think it places a lot more stress on our team because here ... we can keep track of where resources are ... With the calls being dispatched to the west, we don't have that, so it's much more difficult," Moore said. Each person answering a phone knows someone in western North Carolina who has been individually impacted by Helene. "I hope it's providing reassurance for those that are living in the west to know their calls are going to be answered and help will get there. It may not be as quickly as it normally would, but they know a call is being received," Moore said. And they're ready to help answer every call for the long haul. The team is anticipating weeks, if not months, of calls from the west coming to them. If you live in North Carolina and want to check on a loved one, call 211. If you live outside of the state, call (888) 892-1162. You'll be placed on a log for first responders to follow up with you.
