WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - Whooping Cough, also known as Pertussis, is circulating throughout Winnebago County, and health officials are reminding the public how to stay safe. Whooping Cough cases have been increasing not only in Wisconsin but throughout the United States. As of Sept. 30, 2024, Winnebago County says it has 21 confirmed cases, compared to only one in 2023. You can get Whooping Cough by coming into contact with an infected person's saliva. The Winnebago County Public Health Department gives examples of when someone talks, coughs, or sneezes. Residents should know the symptoms of Whooping Cough and contact local medical providers if they have symptoms or suspect they've been exposed to someone with Whooping Cough. "Starting treatment early is very important," said the Winnebago County Public Health Department. "Please see a healthcare provider about testing and treatment." If not treated with the proper antibiotics, those infected with Whooping Cough can spread the disease up to three weeks after the cough begins. Some symptoms to watch for are a runny nose, sneezing, a low-grade fever between 99.5°F and 100.3°F, and a mild occasional cough. Symptoms can progress to an uncontrollable, violent cough that makes breathing hard. After coughing, someone with pertussis may need to take deep breaths, which causes a “whooping” sound. Older siblings, parents, or caregivers might not know they have the disease and can spread it to babies before symptoms appear. It typically takes five to ten days for symptoms to appear after exposure to the bacteria that causes Whooping Cough.
