VAN WERT, Ohio (WANE) — To fight the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt instituted the New Deal, starting projects across the country to stimulate the economy. One of those projects was Eggerss Stadium, home to high school football in Van Wert since 1936. But all that age on a concrete stadium meant the school district has had to take action renovating Eggerss. "The stadium was on the brink of not happening anymore, it needed a lot of work," said Mark Bagley, superintendent of Van Wert City Schools. In 2022, the city passed a $5 million bond to get the process started, and now the school is through phase 2. "We're really blessed in phase 2 to have the press box and all the other additions we made to the stadium," "Underneath the stadium is all new concrete... we also have a brand new concessions stand, our other one was very small and has a slanted roof where people were bending over and we have 2 new restrooms." A look at the new concrete below the bleachers. More phases are coming with additional features that the district is excited about. "Next year we're going to put our team back under the stadium, that's been a tradition for a long time... that's going to be a whole new lockerroom with additions on there, also a training room," Bagley said. "Phase 4 will be the new south endzone, with band bleachers, main entrance, ticket booth, another restroom and more concessions stands."
