ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Institute of Technology was chosen to lead research for the United States Space Force.
RIT was given over $9 million for the United States Space Force University Consortium/Space Strategic Technology Institute 3 research. This is regarding advanced space power and propulsion.
"We're trying to look at innovative new materials," said Seth Hubbard, professor of the School of Physics and Astronomy and director of the SSTI research center. "It's very important to find materials that are scalable, manufacturable, but can also withstand the extreme environments in space."
The University of Michigan will also be a leading institution, which includes advancements in solar technology, thrusters, and novel power approaches. RIT says it will work with partners to develop lower-cost, sustainable solar cells for power systems.
The research is in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory. The technology will transition to the Department of Defense.
