CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is reminding residents to report gas price gouging if it is suspected. According to the department, the Anti-Price Gouging Act in Virginia prohibits sellers from charging "unconscionable prices" for necessary goods and services for 30 days after a state of emergency is declared. Motor fuels, like gas and diesel, are considered necessary goods. Anyone who suspects that a business is price gouging of gas can report it using a form on the department's website. For price gouging complaints for other goods or services like water, ice, food, generators, batteries, tree removal services and home repair materials and services, call the Consumer Protection Section in the Office of the Attorney General at 800-552-9963 or 804-786-2042, or visit the Office of the Attorney General's website and select "Citizen Resources."
