Lexington, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Many residents across Kentucky are experiencing their fourth consecutive day without electricity as remnants of Hurricane Helene swept through the state on Friday. The storm caused extensive damage, including downed power lines and fallen trees, leaving nearly 20,000 homes and businesses in central and eastern Kentucky without power as of Monday morning. At the height of the storm, approximately 200,000 customers were affected. “We don’t have any electricity to cook something for the kids, or to wash our clothes,” said Dulce Silva, a Fayette Co. resident without power. Utility companies, including Kentucky Utilities, report that their linemen have been working around the clock to restore power. The storm has been characterized as historic by utility officials. “It has become the fourth most impactful storm to our utility in the last 20 years,” said Drew Gardner with Kentucky Utilities. One resident recalls a tree falling on a powerline right outside her home, she told ABC 36, a fire started in her front yard. “My daughter called, and she said, ‘we have a fire’,” said Glenda Rice a resident who lost power. “The wires had come down and had actually caught fire in our front yard,” she said, “She [daughter] went out to her car, and one of the wires had fallen and was literally touching her car door, if she had touched her car door it would’ve been bad,” said Rice. While there are hopes for power restoration in much of Fayette County by this evening, officials warn that restoration timelines may vary depending on the extent of the damage in different locations.
