FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Investigators have determined a fire earlier this month at an apartment complex on the southern edge of Fort Wayne was arson. On Sept. 3, the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to Arbors of South Towne Square at 7911 Decatur Road. FWFD initially said the flames ignited in a third-floor bedroom, and crews found smoke throughout the third floor when they arrived. The entire building had to be evacuated, and most of the apartments were occupied when the fire started, according to court documents. While no injuries were reported, 10 of the apartments were so damaged by smoke and water that the residents couldn't immediately come back and were displaced. Evidence at the scene showed three separate fires had been started inside one apartment, an officer with the fire department wrote in Allen Superior Court documents. Among damage in the bedroom, "the mattress inside had been almost completely consumed by fire except for the metal components," the officer said. Investigators also found fire damage around a small pile of clothes in the living room and a small pile of papers near the dining area, with multiple lighters found throughout the apartment, according to court documents. According to court documents, a man who lived at the complex approached investigators just an hour after the investigation began. The 42-year-old allegedly confessed to starting the fire with a "torch lighter." WANE 15 is choosing not to name the suspect due to mental health issues made apparent in court documents. He was "extremely distressed" while telling officers what led him to ignite the fire, according to court documents. He claimed the reasons included pressure from gangs, social media and political figures. The man is charged with arson and has an initial court hearing scheduled for Oct. 1.
