ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - Because of stipulations in a national contract between United Auto Workers and General Motors, it appears 253 part-time temporary workers will no longer be at Fort Wayne Assembly as of Monday. According to the UAW Local 2209 Bargaining Committee Report from Sept. 20, their employment was set to end Sunday, Sept. 29. The report, written by Shop Chairman Rich LeTourneau, claims GM made it clear the company would not move to hire any of the part-time temporary workers, and the latest national agreement sealed the deal. "I will not be signing the temp letter because we want our temps to have a path to full-time & permanent employment," LeTourneau wrote. "General Motors says they will never hire them. By signing the temp letter, we would be exploiting our temps and that contradicts everything the UAW stands for." GM’s Fort Wayne plant to ‘pause’ production due to supply chain issues LeTourneau said before the current leadership existed, he had worked with management to bring on thousands of temporary workers as full-time employees. "We have always worked together, and it is sad we have to bring out the old UAW," the letter reads. "That doesn't mean 2 x 4s and burn barrels, it means we use our intel to show them how much of this business we really understand. We as a Membership and Leadership will always be grateful for GM investing in FWA, I don't believe it's asking too much to invest in those temporary members who have saved them millions!" There are over 4,000 workers at the local plant producing a total of more than 1,300 trucks daily, including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. GM declined an interview but provided a statement: The company and UAW have been unable to reach an agreement for extending part-time temporary team members at Fort Wayne Assembly. According to the provisions of our National UAW-GM contract, without an agreement, we will be required to release about 250 temporary employees on September 30, 2024." Azishia Sease, General Motors WANE 15 has also reached out to the Local 2209 for a statement.
