CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – At least four tornadoes touched down between Charleston, Colleton, and Georgetown counties last week as outer rainbands from Hurricane Helen lashed the area. The National Weather Service in Charleston confirmed two tornadoes in Charleston County, and another in Colleton County, while the office in Wilmington confirmed one tornado in Georgetown County. An EF-1 with maximum winds of 90 mph struck near Gabriel Road in the northern portion of Colleton County just before 1 p.m. The short-lived tornado traveled about 7 miles near Ashton and crossed into Bamberg County, causing damage to numerous trees in its path. Survey teams said a tornado touched down in the Red Top community around 4 a.m. as a rain band moved through the area.  The EF-0 had maximum winds of 80 mph and hit near Savannah Highway just west of Bonanza Road and traveled about two miles, causing tree damage. “The tornado then slightly lifted off of the ground as it crossed Bees Ferry Road and ended at Saint Hubert Way, where a few more small branches were noted.” Snapped trees damaged two units at the Bluewater Apartment complex. An EF-0 also touched down in Rantowles around 4:20 a.m. and traveled 1.96 miles near Savannah Highway and Davidson Road. A tree was uprooted, and several limbs were knocked down. Survey teams out of the NWS Wilmington office found an EF-0 with 65 mph winds hit near Saints Delight Road around 6 a.m. Additional tornadoes could be confirmed in the coming days. No injuries or deaths were reported as a result of these tornadoes. John Quagliariello with the National Weather Service said 63 tornado warnings were issued in South Carolina during the storm. During a briefing after the storm, he said it would be difficult for survey teams to become tornadoes overlapped in some areas, and teams needed to determine whether strong tropical storm-force wind gusts or an actual tornado caused damage.
