COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An 8-year-old was killed during a Saturday night crash at the intersection of Jefferies Highway and Pleasant Grove Road, officials say. Colleton County Fire Rescue said a southbound Chevrolet Suburban and a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck collided at the intersection around 11 p.m. Both suffered heavy damage and overturned. Five people were injured in the crash; two of those patients were seriously injured. “All occupants of the Suburban were restrained, but one side of the vehicle was torn off resulting in multiple injuries to the child. Other occupants of the SUV performed CPR on the girl until Firefighter-Paramedics arrived,” officials said. The child was taken to Colleton Medical Center but did not survive her injuries. Officials said a 10-year-old girl also suffered multiple life-threatening injuries and was taken to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Her condition was unknown as of Monday morning. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center, and the three other patients were sent to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic was detoured for over four hours while the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the collision.
