OK, Bills fans. Take a look at these names: Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White, Matt Milano, Terrrel Bernard, Taron Johnson. Now compare them to these: Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, Baylon Spector, Cam Lewis, Rasul Douglas. The difference may not count for all of the Bills deficiencies in their blowout loss to the Ravens but it counts for much of the 35-10 defeat. The Bills are a drastically different defense than they were in recent years for a variety of reasons; primarily age and salary cap (Hyde, Poyer, White) and injury (Milano, Bernard and Johnson). And no amount of wishing or “talking proud” can solve that problem. It's going to be a different sort of season with the Buffalo defense adjusting to a new reality. Current defenders are likely to get better as the season progresses but not without bumps in the road. And up against top-tier competition like Baltimore, the Bills will struggle. Spector was overpowered on several running plays in the early going. Cam Lewis was beaten with speed and strength almost every play. They’ll learn and improve but the season marches on. "Overall, we gotta do a better job up front," Sean McDermott said, "offensive line and defensive line." Which leads to this question: Where were Von Miller, Ed Oliver and Da’Quan Jones? Greg Rousseau (2 tackles) and A.J. Epenesa (1) at least made token appearances on the stat sheet. The Ravens dominated the Bills up front and Buffalo had no answers. Thad Brown: Bills get exposed, not ended in Baltimore The Bills mounted a feeble comeback in the third quarter down 21-10. Then they had a trick play go horribly awry. A direct snap to Curtis Samuel fooled no one; his toss to Josh Allen resulted in a sack by Kyle Van Noy and an Allen fumble. The Ravens had a 59-yard touchdown drive and the game was virtually over. The NFL’s highest scoring offense coming into the game, averaging 37 points, settled for 10. The Bills converted just 3 of 13 third downs. “They made more plays today than we did,” said Josh Allen. “That was evident right away.” He was referring to Derrick Henry’s 87-yard touchdown run on the Ravens first play from scrimmage. He went untouched, as he did much of the day en route to 199 rushing yards. After four games, the Bills are getting a sense of who they are. They’re good enough to compete with anyone but not good enough to dominate. "The guys that make up this locker room understand who we are," Allen said. "We’re not going to let this avalanche." That would be good, with another first-place, 3-1 team coming up this Sunday in their reunion with Stefon Diggs and the Houston Texans.
