AUSTIN (KXAN) — One of the main stages at this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival will be completely powered by a hybrid battery system, festival organizations announced Monday. The 2024 festival runs Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 11-13 at Zilker Park in Austin. This year, the IHG Hotels & Resorts stage will operate all of its audio, lighting, video and stage production from the hybrid battery, following a partnership between festival heads and REVERB's Music Decarbonization Project. The pivot marks a shift away from using biodiesel generators on that stage, with the hybrid-powered stage expected to deploy more than one megawatt-hour of battery storage capacity, per the announcement. Along with the IHG Hotels & Resorts stage, ACL officials noted the shade tents at ACL Eats, the western entrance to the festival and some backstage areas will also utilize the hybrid battery systems. RELATED: What you need to know as Austin City Limits set up begins C3 Presents, the company behind ACL, also oversees Lollapalooza and used the battery on the Chicago festival's main stage this year. “Following this year’s highly successful and history-making battery-powered main stage at Lollapalooza, we are excited to bring this sustainable solution to Austin City Limits Music Festival," said Jake Perry, C3 Presents' director of operations and sustainability, in the release. "We have set a goal to build a more sustainable future for music festivals, which involves implementing solutions that make our operations more energy efficient and reinventing how we look at power. We are grateful to REVERB’s Decarbonization Project for their partnership in helping us move closer to our goals.” While ACL will still use biodiesel in diesel engines throughout the festival, organizers said the festival has purchased certified carbon offsets to minimize ACL's carbon emissions footprint. Other more environmentally-conscious features at the festival include recycling and composting services, hydration stations to divert plastic water bottles from ending up in landfills and collaborations with Food for All Project to "donate any unused backstage meals to feed people in need."
