Never easy for the Mets: One win for the playoffs as the White Sox share their dismal record
Sep 30, 2024
The regular season of Major League Baseball ended yesterday, except for the Mets and the Braves, who were rained out of two games last week by Hurricane Helene. They play a doubleheader today in Atlanta to decide which of them, or possibly both, continue into the National League playoffs. If they split today’s games, they both advance. If either is swept, they go home and the Arizona Diamondbacks get the other playoff berth.
Confused? No need to be. The Mets have two chances to win a wild card spot and they only need to win one.
However, whatever happens this afternoon, the 1962 Mets were not overtaken for having a worse record, at 40-120, a .250 winning percentage, when the White Sox stumbled across the finish line yesterday at 41-121, a .253 winning percentage.
Still, using the Babe Ruth/Roger Maris comparison when there are a different number of games in two seasons (160 in 1962 and 162 today), Chicago did worse. The Southsiders suffered their 121st defeat in Game #160, the same number of games played by the 1962 Mets.
So maybe the original Mets are no longer the worst.
