SENECA COUNTY, N.Y. (WROC) — The Seneca County Sheriff's Office has implemented new laser scanning technology that investigators hope will capture more detailed data points of crime and crash scenes. "It makes our job a lot faster, and a lot better," Investigator James Altemari with the Seneca County Sheriff's Office told News 8. Capturing 500 degrees of data, investigators said the Faro Focus laser scanner can scan an entire room in two and a half minutes. "If we have a large scene and something's hidden, we're able to move the scanner from one location to the other, and capture it all," Investigator Altemari said. The scan then creates a 3D representation and provides millions of data points. "The scanner we had before, we would have to scan each point individually, and we would be on scene, regardless of the elements, for hours and hours at a time," Investigator Altemari said. And the more scans done, the more details it is able to provide. "As you can see, you can get a ton of detail from just the four scans that we did in this room, and then we also brought it into another room, a break room next door, just to connect the rooms and see what it looks like," Investigator James Palmer said. Investigator Altemari told News 8 with this technology, investigators will now be able to revisit the captured scenes whenever they need throughout an investigation. "It kind of puts the whole scene into perspective in a courtroom," Investigator Altemari said. "The jury themselves are going to be walking through the scene, through this program for the most part, so they're seeing what we see as we enter into the crime scene." The Seneca County Sheriff's Office says although it has not had any scenes that they've needed to use the technology, the appropriate staff has been trained for when it is needed.
