CORRALES, N.M. (KRQE) – With the changing of the seasons comes the changing of one specific mayor in New Mexico - more specifically, the pet's mayor.“Everybody has a home in Corrales.” Chimayo Chile becoming rarer as fewer farmers stick with tradition Going on it's 7th election, the pet mayor of Corrales has been determined by the people or the paws. As part of a campaign to help out Corrales Animal Services, the pet mayor elections have raised thousands of dollars in the past with last year just under $4000. Any pet in the village can run. Chickens, goats, dogs, and even a guinea pig ran this year. “That's why we live here. That's why we like Corrales and made the decision to be here because it's a welcoming place for everybody. Once again, goats, horses, people, chickens, you name it." The torch was passed on from Wendell a Nigerian goat, to a first for the village, Chico Suave the first mini horse elected as pet mayor. Long-time fall festival shines spotlight on Japanese culture “This is Chico Suave, and he's our new mayor, our new pet mayor, and he will be using his voice to raise awareness of equestrian trail safety throughout the village, and he's eight years old." The public noted they loved how animal-friendly the village is and how the race helps the animals of Corrales. “I’m just so glad that we have places like this here in New Mexico that are able to put on these kind of events for horses and goats and animals and stuff.”
