ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Help is on the way for folks facing devastation in the South after Hurricane Helene unleashed its wrath. How Helene became the near-perfect storm to bring widespread destruction across the South More than 60 people are dead and hundreds more have been reported missing. Homeowners in impacted communities are left picking up the pieces, and millions have been left without power. Saturday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that her office will be sending resources from agencies to aid people in areas hit hardest. Seventeen soldiers from the Army National Guard, three heavy life helicopters and four generators are on the way, according to Hochul. The bulk of these resources, namely the soldiers and the aircraft, are coming from Rochester. They're based at Army Aviation Support Facility #2 and are expected to be there for a little over a week - about seven to ten days, Hochul announced, adding that it's the same unit that was deployed in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. Hochul said the soldiers and helicopters are headed to South Carolina to aid the North Carolina National Guard, and the generators are going to Georgia.
