(ELLICOTT, Colo.) — All Ellicott schools will resume normal sessions starting on Monday, Sept. 30, according to Ellicott School District 22 Superintendent Chris Smith. This announcement, sent on Sunday, Sept. 29, followed several days of closures due to a cracked pipe in the sewer system. A flash alert sent Tuesday night, Sept. 24, confirmed the closure for all students and staff, starting on Wednesday, Sept. 25. PREVIOUS STORY: Ellicott School District closed for sewer issue In the announcement, Superintendent Smith said "Due to the litigious nature of this situation specifics will not be given at the direction of our legal counsel. We will provide details as the situation progresses and can after consultation with our attorney."  He went on to say that the district has been working to secure a safe and responsible solution to the sewer system situation. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the Ellicott Utilities Company, LLC (EUC) posted an update saying District 22 is connected to the EUC system through a lift station with both primary and backup pumps, along with overflow storage. On Sept. 24, both pumps failed. The overflow storage worked as it was designed and no wastewater discharge or contamination occurred. According to EUC, the wastewater system is operated by Cromwell Excavation, Inc., which is investigating the pump failures and working with District 22 to reduce flow to the lift station. In the meantime, wastewater is being pumped by truck to prevent any discharge. Cromwell, EUC, and District 22 are collaborating on repairs to restore normal operation.
