Zach Wilson did not take a snap during the Broncos’ 10-9 win over the Jets on Sunday, but being back at MetLife Stadium still evoked some emotions for the fourth-year quarterback. “A little bittersweet of course,” Wilson told the Daily News afterward, “but excited that we got that win.” Sunday marked Wilson’s first game in the Meadowlands since the Jets traded the former No. 2 overall pick to the Broncos during the offseason in a late-round pick swap. That trade ended a tumultuous tenure in which Wilson, 25, went 12-21 as a starter and threw 23 touchdown passes against 25 interceptions. Wilson was supposed to serve as the Jets’ backup last season but was pressed into starting duty after Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on the fourth offensive snap of Week 1. The Jets went 4-7 in games started by Wilson last season and finished with a 7-10 record. Wilson was benched three times during his final two seasons with the Jets. He did not appear in their last three games of 2023 after he suffered a concussion in Week 14. Now third on the Broncos’ depth chart, Wilson served as the emergency quarterback in Sunday’s game. During warmups, he shared a laugh and snapped a selfie with a shouting fan who apologized for the Jets’ treatment of him, according to NFL Network. Wilson also spoke on the field with several former Jets teammates before kickoff. “They’re all great dudes, and it was good to see a lot of those guys, get to catch up a little bit,” Wilson said. “Obviously, being there for three years, there’s a lot of good memories between that locker room.” .@AaronRodgers12 and @ZachWilson reunite : #DENvsNYJ — 1pm ET on CBS/Paramount+: https://t.co/waVpO8ZBqG pic.twitter.com/PeJlsAfoEv — NFL (@NFL) September 29, 2024 Among them was Rodgers, who last week said he looks at Wilson like “a little brother.” “I was really happy for him the way he finished that preseason,” Rodgers, 40, said. “And, you know, I think this would be a good year for him to kind of reset and then hopefully he gets an opportunity down the road.” Their conversation Sunday, Wilson said, involved him asking Rodgers about his injury progress. “He said he’s feeling good,” Wilson said of Rodgers, who led the Jets (2-2) into field-goal range on their final drive Sunday but watched Greg Zuerlein miss a would-be game-winning 50-yarder with 47 seconds remaining. “Him and I, I’m sure, will always have a pretty good relationship and keep in touch,” Wilson said. “He’s a phenomenal quarterback. I think he’s doing a lot of amazing things over there, and he’s scary for any team going against him, especially at the end there. I’m always rooting for him.”
