It’s no secret the Geneva Eagles want to run the ball — and run it a lot. Who to key on to slow them down? Now that is the million-dollar question. Geneva (5-1) has had four different ball-carriers lead the team in rushing in six games so far. Bryce Peet, Hayden Diemer, Caden Proy and quarterback Luke Barbo have each led the team in rushing, making the Eagles a tough team to defend even if the opposition knows that the run game is coming. “We’ve had a pretty balanced attack so far,” said Coach Don Shymske. “That balance is a definite an advantage. When you spread the ball around like that, it’s harder for teams to key on one guy.” Luke Barbo Barbo led the team in rushing in the opener against University (15 carries, 123 yards) and the in the Week 5 loss to Perry (11-for-75). Peet led the team against Harvey (6-for-157) and Edgewood (12-for-159), Dimer led against New Middletown Springfield (10-for-91) and Proy led against Lutheran West (8-for-140). A big key, Shymske said, has been the offensive line of tackles Mason Lomas and Jacob Clemens, guards Connor Brenneman and Jamil Daghlas and center Chase Cinco. When Cinco went down with an MCL injury, Austin Murphy has stepped in and played well the past couple weeks. Tight end Dominic Palmisano is also an integral part of the line. Bryce Peet “Our offensive line was one of the areas where at the beginning of the year we felt had to jell,” Shymske said. “They’ve done an excellent job. We’ve been able to move the ball against quality teams. I’m happy with the way that group has come along.” Geneva hosts Conneaut (1-5) in Week 6. Even with the lopsided 44-7 loss to Perry in Week 5, the Eagles are fifth in Division III, Region 9 and are considered the favorite to win the CVC Valley Division title for the second year in a row (though a Week 9 game against visiting Madison looms large). “We still have an opportunity to win our conference and duplicate the success we had last year,” Shymske said. “Hopefully we can exceed what we did last year. All of our goals are still in front of us. “When people look at you and see you lost 15 seniors, they expected us to be down this year. For us to have this kind of start and have a nice season going is a testament to the kids and how hard they’ve worked.”
