A bridge carrying state Route 306 over the Chagrin River in Kirtland is currently expected to fully reopen in late October, according to an Ohio Department of Transportation representative. The bridge has been under construction since March. During that time, Route 306 has been limited to southbound traffic only between the intersection with Markell Road and the intersections with Eisenhower Drive and state Route 615. Ohio Department of Transportation District 12 Public Information Officer Brent Kovacs said that the project has faced “a short delay in the delivery of the steel beams of the bridge.” As of Sept. 25, he said that ODOT does not anticipate that the beam delays will delay the bridge’s expected late October reopening. He added that ODOT will implement short bridge closures to install the beams once they arrive, but those closures will not last longer than 15 minutes. He said that once the agency has more information regarding dates, that information will be posted to ODOT’s Lake County: Construction Update webpage. Kirtland City Engineer Doug Courtney also provided updates on other projects throughout the city at a recent city council meeting and in a follow-up email. Courtney said that the city’s 2024 road program has begun, with paving work on Shaw, Thorne and Monterey avenues and Parkwood, Crestwood, Elmwood and Beechwood drives. City Council voted in June to award the program to Specialized Construction of Cuyahoga Heights, allowing Mayor Kevin Potter to enter an agreement with a maximum price tag of just over $1.5 million. The program also includes Woodhill Road, Forestdale Drive and Westwood Road. Work has also begun on a bridge project on Booth Road. Courtney had not been given a completion date for the county project, but said that it is expected to take six to eight weeks. He said earlier this year that the Booth Road project was initially set to begin in the spring, though it faced delays after an ODOT commenting process. Courtney said that paving work for the Old Town sewer project is almost finished. After the paving work is done, crews will work on general restoration, seeding and project finalization. He expects that the project will be completed in October or November. The installation of sanitary sewers in the city’s “Old Town” area was required by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, after officials investigated reports that contaminants from local septic tanks were entering nearby storm sewers and waters. The first phase of installation was completed last year, and the second phase was completed over the summer.
