(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand LAWRENCE TWP. — The Notre Dame High girls soccer players looked at each other after going down by two goals and swore this wasn’t how it was going to end. Then the Irish went and completed a dramatic turnaround as they rallied from that deficit to beat Lawrence, 4-2, in a CVC Colonial Division match on Saturday morning. “It’s all about the mental,” said junior midfielder Ashton Robbins. “At the beginning of the season, we were kind of down on ourselves, but we’ve been coming back so much and keeping the great mindset. That was why we were able to come back. It was a total team effort.” Notre Dame (4-4-1) got off to a slow start this season, which was largely due to its inaccuracy in front of goal and some bad bounces inside its own box, but the fortunes have turned in the last week. The Irish started with a 3-0 victory over Robbinsville, netted six in a victory over Hightstown and then capped it with Saturday’s dramatic comeback. “Out struggle in the beginning was just being able to put pieces together,” Robbins said. “Once it clicked, I think we’re going to be able to keep going. Something changed in us and I can see it.” Lawrence (7-3) was trying to win the township derby for the first time in 23 years and looked on its way after Michaela Little powered in a pair of headers — goals number eight and nine on the year — a minute and a half apart. Both tallies came from corner kicks, with CVC assists leader Becca Boggs supply the crosses. “(Heading) is just something natural to me,” said Little, a senior, who has 25 career goals. “I like to be hungry in the box. Me and Bec work on it all the time. We love the connection we have.” But, as the cliche goes, a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous in soccer. Sure enough, the Irish wrestled momentum back six minutes before intermission when Riley Cunningham crashed at the back post to knock in a Savannah Bryant pass. The Irish quickly turned that momentum into an equalizer early in the second half. Of course junior winger Anna Guido, who had three goals in the two meetings between the teams last season, including the game winner in the MCT quarterfinals, had to be on the one to score it. Elizabeth O’Mara scored the go-ahead goal with 12 minutes remaining when she hit a long shot that skidded off the wet turf and into the goal. Her older sister, Reagan, wrapped up the points when she finished off a 3-on-2 counterattack into an open net with 6:20 to go. “We didn’t get down on ourselves, we didn’t get down on each other,” Robbins said. “We came together and we’re like this isn’t how it’s going to end. We picked it up and we had the drive to get this done.” “We just talked at halftime about how the momentum is going to shift in any game,” Lawrence coach Emily Palombo said. “You kind of have to withstand that shift and try to fight for it back because it will come back to you.” On the other side of town, the Cardinals had a tough week. They lost a tight 1-0 decision to Hopewell Valley on Tuesday and have now thrown away a two-goal lead against their biggest rival. “We all fought so hard and the most important thing is to come together after this,” Little said. “We have a small team, but we all love each other. … It’s still September and we have so much soccer left. I know that we can come together and come out stronger.” Lawrence (7-3) 2 0 — 2 Notre Dame (4-4-1) 1 3 — 4 Goals: Cunningham, Guido, E. O’Mara, R. O’Mara (ND). Little 2 (LHS).
