NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The Rio Grande Rivalry is on Saturday, and the mayors of the respective cities have their own personal pride on the line - thanks to a friendly bet. Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez said whoever is the mayor of the losing city will have to adorn the winning team by wearing their gear. “Mayor Enriquez better have his cherry and silver ready to go because this team is brimming with talent, it’s hardworking, and it’s led by an experienced coach who’s ready to bring a win back to Albuquerque in the Rio Grande Rivalry,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “[Saturday]’s game is a New Mexico favorite and gives Albuquerque and Las Cruces a chance to come out and show their pride for our beautiful state.”  Story continues below Trending: Investigation underway into chemical storage at New Mexico Highlands University after death News: BCSO sheriff weighs in on drug informant tipoff case Balloon Fiesta: Family pet takes flight in namesake special shape for Balloon Fiesta Community: Fees for state parks may be going up soon in New Mexico “Mayor Keller and I are both proud of our home teams, and it seems only fitting that we put our pride on the line at least once a year for a game that brings us all together,” said Mayor Eric Enriquez, “If the Lobos win, I’ll don cherry and silver for a day. But nothing would make me happier than seeing my friend Tim in crimson and white.”  The rivalry began in 1894 with UNM leading the all-time series with 73 wins, 35 losses, and 5 ties. The Lobos haven't won a single game against the Aggies since 2021, however. The game will air at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
