EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — New Mexico State University football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright "will not be with the team" while the university investigates Wright's posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) from more than a decade ago that are being called distributing, insensitive, and derogatory. Nick Coppola of the Las Cruces Sun-News was first to report the news late Friday night. NMSU confirmed to KTSM that Wright "will not be with the team" amid the university's investigation into the resurfaced posts. As of 10:47 MT, New Mexico State athletic director Mario Moccia tells the Sun-News that offensive coordinator Tyler Wright will “not be with the team” while the University investigates this matter. https://t.co/dr83YajDpI— Nick Coppola (@Nick_Coppola__) September 28, 2024 The Las Cruces Sun-News reported "Wright's posts include nearly 100 remarks on LGBTQ+ individuals including homophobic slurs, more than 60 references to Ugandan warlord (Joseph) Kony – many of which include racial remarks about Africans and African Americans – at least a dozen degrading posts toward females, nine posts stereotyping and demeaning Hispanics and Latinos and five uses of common racial slurs for Blacks." The Sun-News reported many of the posts from Wright were made while he was a student-athlete at Tarleton State University from 2011-2014. New Mexico State University sent KTSM this statement. "Late Friday evening, the university was made aware of some tweets made by assistant football coach Tyler Wright between 10 and 14 years ago. The coach will not be with the team while the university reviews this matter." "NMSU is proud to be a Hispanic-serving institution as well as a minority-serving institution. Additionally, as the state’s land-grant institution, NMSU is committed to serving our diverse, multi-cultural population of students and community members from across the state." It is unclear how long the university's investigation will take and what the outcome will be for Wright at this point. Wright will miss New Mexico State's game against rival New Mexico at Aggie Memorial on Saturday night, Sept. 28. It is also unclear who will be calling plays for the Aggies. Wright is a native of Granbury, Texas and a graduate of Granbury High School. Wright played wide receiver at Tarleton State. Through his final semester as a student at Tarleton, Wright served as a student intern for the Tarleton State Texans’ football team. In 2015, Wright became the wide receivers coach and video coordinator at Odessa Permian High School. He spent three seasons there (2015-2017). In 2018, Wright served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at UT Permian Basin (NCAA DII). After one year at UTPB, Wright served as an offensive graduate assistant at TCU from 2019 to 2021. While at TCU, Wright worked with Jerry Kill as both were members of then TCU head coach Gary Patterson's staff. In December 2021, Kill, who was named NMSU football's 35th head coach in program history, hired Wright as the team's special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. After two seasons in that role, and as a result of Kill's departure and the promotion of Tony Sanchez as head coach, Wright was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2024 season. Wright was looked at as up-and-coming talent in the college coaching ranks. He earned an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Under 35 selection in December of 2023.
