OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Of all the shows and all the art that's been hung on the walls of Studio Six since 1994, the pieces we watched go up in late September 2024 might best represent the time that's gone by. The gallery and working studio began with a group of artist friends who jumped at a new studio space in the Paseo District that had started its life as a filling station. Mary Nickell, Regina Murphy, Sue Moss Sullivan, Winnie Hawkins, Donna Berryhill, and B.J. White were the original six. "I used to be taller," jokes Sullivan. She is still here along with B.J. White. Regina Murphy's daughters 'Mikey' and Patty are still involved and working here. Gayle Curry and Marissa Raglin have joined the collective more recently. Every one of them has always been willing to provide advice or encouragement in equal measure. "There's always been open critiques," laughs White. "Whether you want them or not," says Curry. The art piled up like paint layers over the decades, Sullivan's paper, Nickell's sculptures, even Raglin's collages. "We aren't real neat," Metcalfe confirms. She remembers her mother starting her art career after retiring. "We did everything together, art wise." previous More Great State Stories Studio Six at 30: A Paseo Arts District mainstay looks back A different type of sport has two OKC athletes training for a world competition in Italy A very small farm in Blanchard is very thankful for a second growing season We featured Regina Murphy in 2018 at the age of 96, still working at the studio every day. Both 'Mikey' and her sister moved right in after Regina passed, work piling on work. "Layer upon layer, upon layer," 'Mikey' says. "I supported her 100%," Patty agrees. They still refer to themselves as the only all-woman owned studio/gallery in Oklahoma. "What's the magic of this place?" we inquire. "I think the love of art and creativity," insist Metcalfe and Curry. "We love helping each other and inspiring each other." After 30 years of artwork pouring out the old bay doors, it is finally revealed together. Studio Six is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a show representing all of the artists work. The opening reception to the show is Friday, September 27. A reception runs from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. For more information on the gallery and artists go to their Facebook page here.
