JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The future of recycling in Jefferson Parish is up in the air. "There is hope for a cleaner, greener future right here in Jefferson Parish," said REALCYCLE CEO Benjamin Bagwill. On early Saturday morning, residents of Jefferson Parish take time to recycle at the local drop-off site. "It's something that makes me feel less guilty about throwing that stuff in the landfill, in the garbage," said Jefferson Parish resident Greg. Louisiana Red Cross sends volunteers to Florida for Hurricane Helene "Reduce, reuse and recycle are not taught in schools. You see where all the plastic is going into the water and the water is affecting the sea levels," said another Jefferson Parish resident. Yet the drop-off pilot program is ending until the parish council finds a new resolution. Since it began six months ago, REALCYCLE has been hand-sorting and separating recyclables, but Bagwill explains the cost has become too high. "We hope the council stays in touch with us, because this is our passion project. We are connecting with the community, and we want Jefferson Parish to work with us to figure out a solution to keep plastic out of the landfill," said Bagwill. Some residents understand that not everyone recycles, but believe even if it is a small percentage, there should be a program for recycling in the parish. NOPD federal consent decree could be winding down "I think there are a number of ways we can do it, and this program has been really popular as you see with the lines of cars," said Greg. Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken explains there will be a brief break as council funding begins in November, with hopes to pick back up next year. Bagwill emphasizes there is a need for recycling in the area. "What we are doing here is important for the future of Jefferson Parish. What we are doing here is reimagining how we recycle. We don't throw everything into one bin. Things are separated into the proper sources, into the proper streams to ensure what we take can actually be recycled," said Bagwill.
