PURLEAR, N.C. – Two dirt bike drivers, riding without helmets, were killed after colliding head-on in Wilkes County overnight, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. It happened around midnight Saturday on Shingle Gap Road near CC Hayes Road in Purlear, North Carolina, approximately 10 miles west of Wilkesboro. Troopers say a Honda dirt bike was traveling north on Shingle Gap Road when it collided head-on with a southbound Suzuki dirt bike in the center of the roadway. Both drivers, 21-year-old Matthewn Blankenship, operating the Honda, and 30-year-old Orin Harless, operating the Suzuki, died at the scene. The preliminary investigation said that neither speed nor impairment were contributing factors. However, neither driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
